Chocolaterie Knösel (Café Knösel)

Chocolaterie at Haspelgasse 16, founded in 1863 and home of the Heidelberg Student Kiss. The city of Heidelberg calls Café Knösel the oldest café in town.

The Chocolaterie Knösel at Haspelgasse 16, next to the Church of the Holy Spirit, was founded in 1863. Here chocolatier Fridolin Knösel created the Heidelberg Student Kiss: as the house tells it, young ladies from boarding schools met students under the eyes of their governesses, and the chocolate stood for their secret affection. The Student Kiss is semi-sweet milk chocolate filled with a truffle, nougat, hazelnut and cream praline and is made fresh several times a week. It comes in packs from a single piece to six, each with the story in German and English, alongside other pralines. The city of Heidelberg describes Café Knösel as the first and oldest café in town.
