The historic main building of the Ruperto Carola on University Square, with the Old Aula and the famous student prison in the rear courtyard.
The Old University, built in 1712, is the historic heart of Germany's oldest university (founded in 1386). The Old Aula with its rich wood paneling and the student prison on Augustinergasse, where unruly students were locked up from 1778 to 1914, are both open to visitors.
