The Zum Roten Ochsen inn was built in 1703 and has been owned by the Spengel family without interruption since 1839, now run in the sixth generation by Philipp and Anne Spengel. The dining room holds relics from more than 185 years of student history, including a letter from Bismarck to the landlord Karl Spengel. The house's guest list includes Mark Twain, Theodor Heuss and John Wayne. The deliberately short menu offers German home cooking such as boiled beef brisket, cider-braised roast, Schäufele, matjes herring, venison ragout and caraway roast pork, plus vegetarian dishes like cheese spätzle; produce comes from local suppliers. The kitchen is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, on other days by arrangement. Book by phone or via the form, at short notice by phone only.
