Summer · June to September

Castle Illumination

On several Saturdays in summer the castle is bathed in Bengal light and a huge fireworks display is set off over the Neckar - one of Heidelberg's most spectacular events.

The Heidelberg Castle Illumination commemorates the destruction of the castle by French troops in 1689 and 1693. On several Saturdays between June and September the castle is lit up in Bengal red, followed by a large fireworks display launched from the Neckar. Heidelberg Marketing sets the number and the dates anew each year.
