Castle Illumination

Three times a year the castle is bathed in Bengal light and a huge fireworks display is set off over the Neckar - one of Heidelberg's most spectacular events.

The Heidelberg Castle Illumination commemorates the destruction of the castle by French troops in 1689 and 1693. Three times a year (the first Saturday in June, July and September) the castle is lit up in Bengal red, followed by a large fireworks display launched from the Neckar.
