Student Prison

The old detention cells for Heidelberg students - in use from 1778 to 1914, now a cult sight covered in artful wall graffiti.

In the student prison (Karzer), Heidelberg students were locked up between 1778 and 1914 for duels, disturbing the peace at night or insults. The artful silhouettes, soot drawings and inscriptions on the walls offer a unique glimpse into 19th-century student subculture.
